CHARACTER NAME: Haruto Tenjou
SERIES: Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL
CHRONOLOGY: Post Episode 94; When Kaito leaves with Yuma to rescue Shingetsu.
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
Haruto Tenjou was born very frail and sickly, much to his father’s dismay. He spent his life with his older brother Kaito in a cabin, very far from the city (presumably for his health). Meanwhile, Dr. Faker, his father, attempted any means possible to save his son, even betraying his two friends, Byron Arclight and Kazuma Tsukumo to obtain power to save him. Long story and a few weird alien magical portal trips later, Dr. Faker makes a deal with the Barian Lord, Vector, to help his ailing son as long as he destroys the Astral World.
It’s implied that Haruto and his brother are brought back to the city, given that Haruto was in a facility/hospital around the time that Kaito met Chrisopher Arclight, the oldest son of Byron and the person who taught Kaito how to duel. There is some point between here and Haruto being with Mr. Heartland, the owner of Heartland’s amusement park, that the two brothers attempt escape, only to be captured by Heartland and separated from each other until Kaito became a Numbers Hunter in the attempt to “heal Haruto”. Mr. Heartland seems to be using Haruto’s abilities to also destroy the Astral World, but his true intentions beyond helping Dr. Faker are never actually stated.
This was during that point when Haruto seemed to be quite out of it; his usual warm and happy personality was taken over by a darker, sadistic one. The “normal” Haruto was often questioning why he couldn’t enjoy anything anymore, while the alternate personality only wanted to hear screams of the Astral World, which he was charged with destroying, thanks to his father. This is when the brother’s relationship becomes strained on Haruto’s part, since he is often saying he hates his brother for “not thinking of others” or not really paying attention to the things Kaito does for him. However, Kaito continues to press on with his mission to heal his brother.
As the first season goes on, Haruto becomes aware of what Kaito is doing for him and attempts to find a caramel, something that Kaito gave him to feel better when they attempted the aforementioned escape. It’s here that Haruto reveals some of his powers, which involve teleportation and destruction of the area around him. Yuma finds him in the middle of the street, just walking, and attempts to save him from getting hit by a Mack truck. Fortunately for Yuma, Haruto has his super special rock alien powers and he demolishes part of the truck before they escape to Yuma’s house. While at the Tsukumo household, Haruto not only becomes the only person to question Astral’s nakedness, but also enjoys a family meal before being placed to bed. Having a dream about the escape and how Kaito helped him feel better, Haruto wakes back up later in the night and escapes out the window, determined to find that caramel.
Yuma tries to stop him but Haruto again uses his crazy space powers to push the point of “I’m finding the dang caramel” home. Yuma, Astral and Kotori proceed to stay with Haruto and protect him from Gauche and Droite, two of Heartland’s henchmen who are trying to get him “home”. They continue to watch over him until they get to the tower that Haruto recalled from his memory of the escape. When he doesn’t find the caramel, he loses control of his powers in upset.
Astral attempts to figure out what Haruto wants and finds out he just wants the candy to give to his ailing brother, so they ask Kotori, who had gotten candy earlier that day with Yuma, if she had any. Thankfully for the entire world that Haruto is about to blow up, she does, and Yuma uses it to calm Haruto down (as well as a nicely timed Yu-Gi-Oh! Protagonist hug). After explaining the problem fully, Haruto takes the caramel and thanks Yuma for helping him. However, this is when Christopher Arclight shows up, now being called V, and uses weird space magic on Haruto to make him come with him. Yuma allows this, believing that V is a friend, but because of the events leading to Bryon’s physical changes and betrayal from Faker, he indeed isn’t. Haruto is taken to a church in the middle of a lake.
They proceed to siphon Haruto’s powers into Byron (who is now going by Tron), who wants revenge on Dr. Faker for making a deal with a crazy rock alien. Haruto ends up on bed rest, unable to really wake up, after having his powers mostly taken but also giving what he could to Kaito so he could summon Neo-Galaxy Eyes during the duel with Tron’s other sons, Thomas and Michael (IV and III being their names). This is fixed during the duel that Tron loses against Yuma and the power of Super Saiyan (also known as ZEXAL). However, thanks to the Sphere Field technology, Yuma and Astral are stuck in the field and taken to the Heartland tower.
Haruto is then summoned to be the trigger in the Sphere Field Cannon. This lovely little contraption uses Yuma and Astral as “bullets” to destroy the Astral World, while Haruto uses his abilities, with the Numbers, to “fire” them there. However, after witnessing the pain Kaito and Yuma were going through during their duel with his alien possessed father, Haruto uses his abilities to let Astral escape and allow him and Yuma togo super saiyan form ZEXAL.
This rendered the sphere cannon incomplete, and allowed the boys (Yuma, Kaito and Shark) to win their duel against Faker/crazy rock alien also known as Vector. After the duel, Vector proceeds to go lick his wounds for the second season and Haruto returned to his normal self, without the split personality or abilities. Currently, it’s implied that Haruto is living happily with his family.
PERSONALITY:
Haruto, generally, is a kind boy. He never wants to see anyone hurt; he even let a butterfly go that Kaito caught for him because he wouldn’t want it to “live its life in a cage”. Because of his kindness, Haruto does worry about the well being of his brother, as well as the well being of Yuma and Astral, two people who really helped him when he was looking for a caramel to help his brother, who was struggling thanks to the effects of his Photon mode. He’s commented to be quite talkative as well, according to Kaito, and loves to joke.
Despite his age, Haruto is quick to pick up on situations and act accordingly. When his brother was sick, despite the fact that he was sick himself, he tried everything he could to help him. He fully understands the situation with the Barians as well and even though he’s worried for his brother, he understands why he needs to help Yuma. That being said, Haruto isn’t afraid of much. Even in the brief moments that Haruto has been shown “normal” he doesn’t seem to fear for his brother or any situation in front of him. Numerous times, regardless of his state of mind, Haruto has bravely stood up to dangerous enemies to ensure the safety of Yuma, Astral and especially his brother.
Haruto can also be very stubborn. After Yuma and Shark were hospitalized, Kaito was busy researching the Barian “Misael”. Haruto proceeded to walk into the room and yell at him about not going to see them, when they should. Kaito didn’t respond much and Haruto claimed he was going to go on his own, than Kaito finally decided to change his mind and do the same. His willfulness also shone through when he was having his power siphoned by Tron. Kaito was losing a duel, horribly, so Haruto used whatever power he could to not only protect his brother, but to give him the ability to summon his Neo-Galaxy Eyes.
Haruto wants nothing more then to help others, but seems to understand that his body does have limits. As stated before, Haruto is extremely kind to everyone, despite the fact that sometimes, his brother is not. However, even though he is kind, Haruto can recognize when his body is going to give up on him and exactly how much he can do. The only times he’s pressed further on that point was when someone he truly cared for was in danger, or it was forced out of him. All in all, Haruto is generally a good kid but is able to recognize the severity of situations because of his experience.
POWER:
What is/are your character’s superpower(s)? Based on his abilities in canon, Haruto will be able to use the following abilities:
Teleportation: Much like in canon, Haruto is able to teleport himself from one location to another. Unlike in canon, Haruto has full control over it, so he will be able to teleport himself to locations without it being randomized or only available when he’s upset.
Matter Destruction (aka: Super Plot Point Force Field Space Magic): Canonically, Haruto is able to create a field around him, or blast through (it’s not fully explained before he loses his powers in the series) to destroy certain areas. In example, when he teleported out of the tower to find a caramel for Kaito, he was in the middle of a busy street in Heartland City, Haruto was almost run over by a large Mack truck. He was able to completely tear a hole into it, leaving no trace of debris from the hole or items inside. This also happened when he left Yuma’s and almost got hit by cars; they had chunks out of them as if they were never there. It is implied that Haruto is able to extend this field as much as he wants, but it is never really shown beyond two episodes.
In game, however, Haruto will be able to create the field, thus destroying anything that is within the sphere, but he can only extend it to around four feet around him. Additionally, he needs to concentrate on the field otherwise it won’t work. The power is limited to non-living matter, machines and the like. Any living being will not be destroyed while in the sphere field.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: [ There’s a video on the net of a young boy; this young boy to be precise and he’s looking like five Christmases came early ] So I’m really a super hero? Does this mean I get to fly around like Brother does? [ Haruto thinks for a minute and smiles at this idea, considering he’d like to do that sometime…]
Oh! I’m Haruto, and I’m actually looking for someone. You see, my brother, Kaito, can get really grumpy while I’m not around so I was hoping to find him. He’s got kind of a…[ There’s a moment when Haruto mimics Kaito’s frowning face, not really looking as threatening as the actual Kaito tries to be ] face like this, but he’s really kind. Uhm…
[ There’s another moment when Haruto considers the situation, then he smiles to the video again] When do I get a costume?
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: Haruto had been in many towers in his life…or at least big buildings. While he didn’t recognize this one, and he had assessed that he was not dreaming, he finally was able to determine he was taken somewhere else. Kaito was going to be really worried when he came back from helping Yuma and the others. Looking around, Haruto pulled slightly at the hair near his ear, wondering where he should go. Suddenly, a voice spoke to him, asking him for his name and Hero Alias. Alias?
Nothing in the Heartland Tower ever asked for his name, so he wondered if he should provide it. When prompted twice, Haruto decided that it couldn’t hurt. A Hero Alias…Haruto wasn’t sure of a hero that he could model after, aside from Kaito, Yuma or Astral. They didn’t have aliases, did they? Smiling brightly, he came up with something that he knew was going to be very clever.
“Haruto Tenjou! My Hero Alias is ‘Esper Haruto’!”
Once it accepted that, he was given some supplies, and looking down, he wondered what to do. Was Kaito even here? He wasn’t normally allowed to leave the tower without someone to watch him. Taking in a small breath, Haruto hurried off, determined to find his brother or at least someone familiar…It couldn’t hurt to get some answers!
FINAL NOTES: While it’s not stated in canon, Haruto is still recovering from the events in season one (ZEXAL). It’s implied that he’s doing much better, but he’s only really seen a few times in the new season (ZEXAL II). His frail health was something that was a problem before those events, so it may pop up from time to time, but not be a huge issue!
